Treating Migraine Pain Naturally
The search for migraine relief continues for millions of people whose lives are occasionally interrupted by debilitating head pain. It is more common in adult females than in men and often adversely affects their daily activities.. With no cure yet discovered, the search for natural ways to get rid of migraines is continuing.
Symptoms
Many cases of migraine are undiagnosed and often untreated because the pain usually goes away within a few hours. You’ll know when it strikes if you experience any or some of the following signs:
- moderate to severe pain at one side of the head
- throbbing or pulsating head pain
- increasing pain during physical activity
- disabling pain that disrupts daily activities
- nausea with or without vomiting
- sensitivity to light and sound
Causes
While the cause of migraine is not fully understood, genetics, environmental factors and imbalance of a brain chemical called serotonin contribute to the condition. This type of headache is often seen in families who may experience similar warning signs or “premonition” such as the following:
- visual disturbances or seeing an aura
- feelings of elation
- intense energy
- thirst
- cravings for sweet foods
Treatment
There is no cure for migraine and the common goal of treatment is to reduce the severity, and duration of the head pain. The usual pain prescription containing ibuprofen or paracetamol is not suitable for pregnant women and may interact with other medication that a patient is taking..
Regular use of NSAID carries harmful side effects like stomach pain, gastric bleeding and ulcers. Long term treatment using strong pain medicine may also lead to stronger rebound head pain and may create a dependency in patients.. This is why many are now looking for natural ways to get rid of migraines.
Herbs
Herbal medicine relies on the naturally occurring compounds and substances found in plants to reduce the symptoms of migraine like inflammation of the blood vessels and regulate hormonal levels. It is safe, inexpensive and generally does not produce unwanted side effects.
Traditional Chinese medicine treats head pain using Feverfew. Hormonal imbalance may trigger headaches in women around the time they get their period. Natural herbs like Dong Quai which help regulate hormone levels are often effective.. Other natural herbs to try include Gingko which improves blood flow to the brain and white willow bark which has similar pain relieving properties as aspirin.
Most migraine sufferers are constantly looking for natural solutions for their head pain.. But as with most illnesses, it is best to consult a health professional about your migraine to rule out other causes of your head pain before deciding on the best treatment for it.
